Description

In the mid-60s Uruguay was immersed in the deepest crisis in its history. The rulers showed their inability to correct the economy, while society began to demand solutions, more and more vigorously. Pressured by international organizations and threatened by neighboring dictatorships, the government of Pacheco Areco applied an adjustment policy that had to be accompanied by a strong repressive onslaught. The overflowing of the government surprised the mobilized society, which reacted with energy but felt abandoned by the partisan majorities. This book describes the impact of repressive politics and the realignment of political forces, in a rebalancing that would mark the next fifty years.
