Lionel Scaloni entered the temple of god-like coaches and will remain there until the last ball stops rolling in Argentina, without the fans knowing much of his story. The most unexpected builder of the national team—our Ministry of Joy—sculpted his work in motion, first during the four years in which he deftly avoided critics who doubted his lack of credentials, and then, already blessed by the masses, during Qatar 2022.
But even without the prior biographies of his two predecessors in glory, César Menotti and Carlos Bilardo, the third star was not a building without blueprints. Scaloni built his footballing mind over 30 years, first in his not-so-well-known career as a player, far from the main spotlights—because he was more a player of commitment than of skill and never played for the so-called big clubs—and later as a member of the coaching staff in the chaos of Russia 2018. Everything he began applying to the national team from September 2018 he had learned since his origins in football in the early '90s.
"Revolución Scaloni" is a magnificent road movie with two timelines. One, as a player across Argentina (his native Pujato, Newell's in Rosario, and Estudiantes de La Plata), Spain (Deportivo La Coruña, Racing de Santander, Mallorca), England (West Ham), and Italy (Lazio and Atalanta), almost always in parallel to his membership in José Pekerman's national teams, both youth and senior. And the other, as a coach through all the cities where Argentina of the Lionels, Scaloni and Messi, played on their way to eternity: from debuting in Los Angeles to reaching the heavens in Doha, with intermediate stops at the Maracanã, Wembley, and the rest of the cycle.
Erected as a reference in current sports journalism, Alejandro Wall has done it again: no one will truly know Scaloni until they finish this book.
