Alfajor Cachafaz: A Controversial Story
Have you ever tried a Cachafaz Alfajor? Or its amazing Dulce de Leche?
Nowadays this brand is practically a synonym of Alfajor. But this company of no more than twelve years of history gained the reputation it has now in a quite controversial way.
Behind the brand there are three siblings, Leonardo, Javier and Gastón Alcaraz who first started to elaborate a line of “alfajores de maicena” (alfajores made with cornstarch cookies) and now have one of most outstanding companies of Alfajores in Argentina. The three of them are hardly known by the press since they never actually gave any interviews. Some people say that everything started when they lost their father, so they had to help their mom to make a living selling these alfajores de maicena made with her recipe.
The controversial part of this story comes with the supposed origin of the company’s growth, how they became successful and how their products gained the place they have today.
Apparently, in order to make the name of the company known they started a rumor, “fake news”, about the recipe of the Alfajores they produced. They supposedly said that an old employee of the most famous and recognized brand of Alfajores in the country, Havanna, had given them the same formula and recipe of the product.
This rumor was never actually verified by anyone so the years passed and the company established itself as one of the most successful companies of Alfajores in the country. They grew so much, that they actually became the rival of the ones they claimed to copy.
Last year reporter from a famous Argentinean newspaper about business had access to the truth. The Alcaraz siblings did not gave an interview but reveled that the rumor was actually spread by them when the company was starting, because they didn’t have the resources to invest on a good marketing campaign so they thought that implying their alfajores were as good as the best alfajor in the country would help them. What they really did, was to search for the same provider of the Dulce de Leche that Havanna used and work with it too.
That was the way they elaborated a very similar product and made a place and name for it in a highly competitive industry slowly becoming one of the most famous Alfajores of the country.
