How to make a good mate
First, it is necessary to list each and every one of the necessary elements that make the preparation of the mate. These are: mate (gourd), great yerba mate, high-quality fresh water, a boiler, thermos and bombilla (straw). With all these elements you will be ready to prepare the mate, although we still have to see how to make it delicious.

Any of us knows how to prepare the mate but to do it and that it is irresistible to our palate we propose to meet certain requirements. The first thing you should do is introduce the water to the kettle, and heat it over a moderate heat. The water should not reach its boiling point and for this you must control it while it is heated.

While the water is heating up, it is necessary to introduce the yerba mate into the mate, never allowing it to completely cover the gourd. Try to cover only 3/4 parts of the gourd with yerba, and that way you will keep the right amount. It's a common beginner's mistake to use too much or too little yerba. Then, take the mate, cover its lid with your hand and agitate it, so that you remove all the powdery yerba that may be inside.

When the water is already warm (it is not yet to be used) begin to introduce a little in the mate. This is to moisten the yerba and prime it for receiving more water. Remember that the water should never cover the entire surface of the yerba and for that to not happen, you have to serve it with caution.

Finally and before the water boils, use a thermos that allows to always preserve its temperature. Under that scenario, you'll be ready to make some delicious mates.

Remember:

  • Heat water over moderate heat.
  • Do not let the water boil, this will only burn the yerba and ruin it.
  • Do not fill all the mate with yerba, only 3/4 parts of it.
  • Moisten the yerba with warm water before starting.
