Cuenta la milenaria leyenda que "quien come calafate queda atrapado por su encanto y siempre regresa a la Patagonia". Crece en montes bajos, al margen de los ríos y arroyos, claros del bosque y áreas húmedas de estepas. Su cultivo es dificultoso ya que este arbutos tiene espinas de hasta 20 cm de largo.
