How to Cure Your Mate
Fill your new mate gourd with used, moist yerba and add a bit of warm or hot water (up to 80°C / 176°F).
Let it rest for 24 hours. Remember, the water should never reach the rim (where the metal begins) to avoid leaks.
The next day, remove the yerba with a spoon and use it to gently scrape the interior surface of the gourd.
Wipe the inside of the mate with a napkin to remove moisture and let it air-dry for a few hours.
Repeat this process five more times before using your mate for the first time. In some cases, dark green spots may appear—don’t worry, that’s completely normal!
Each mate you drink helps perfect the curing process.
How to Prepare a Good Mate
Start by filling ¾ of your mate with yerba. Shake it slightly to remove dust and mix the contents. Tilt it to one side to form a small yerba mound.
Pour warm water into the hollow space on the opposite side of the mound. Let it rest for 30 to 45 seconds so the yerba can absorb and begin to infuse.
After this time, you can add hot mate water (between 75°C and 80°C / 167°F to 176°F). If your yerba is finely ground, let it absorb for a bit longer.
Insert your bombilla (metal straw) by covering the tip with your finger to prevent clogging, and place it into the yerba.
And that’s it, you're ready to enjoy your mate!
