La historia comienza cuando Stan Laurel (el actor cómico de la famosa serie del Gordo y el Flaco) acude al detective Philip Marlowe (el personaje creado por el escritor Raymond Chandler), también en el ocaso de su esplendor, para que averigüe por qué ya nadie lo llama para trabajar. Parodiando al conocido y esquemático cine norteamericano, la narración origina acontecimientos en los que el propio Soriano aparece como personaje para volverse cómplice de Marlowe y enfrentar así a las figuras más detestables. 'Tenía la obsesión de Laurel y Hardy desde mi infancia. Y desde que descubrí a Chandler estaba fascinado con Philip Marlowe. Pero hizo falta que un gato me diera la idea de la novela: el único capaz de investigar la historia del Gordo y el Flaco era un detective profesional como Marlowe. Me metí como personaje para divertirme: pensaba sacarme, pero cuando la di a leer a los amigos y vi que funcionaba, lo fui dejando para más adelante, y un día la terminé.
