Different kinds of Argentine alfajores

Alfajores are a traditional treat from Argentina, loved by Argentinians and known all over the world thanks to expats who travel and spread the country’s culture and traditions as they do. Although the concept of ‘alfajores’ is already well-known, the recipes vary depending on the province of Argentina that makes them. Look at all the different types of minicakes there are:

ALFAJORES FROM MAR DEL PLATA, BUENOS AIRES PROVINCE

A great example is the classic one from Havanna. Alfajores marplatenses are made of two chocolate cookies covered in milk chocolate and always have dulce de leche filling.

ALFAJORES FROM SANTA FE

At first glance, they look like a slice of torta de rogel (a traditional cake from Argentina, and very common dessert in the country). They are made of toasted dough cookies filled with dulce de leche and dipped in icing.

ALFAJORES FROM CÓRDOBA

Alfajores cordobeses are usually glazed and filled with fruit. Their dough is also softer and thinner than that of Mar del Plata’s alfajores.

ALFAJORES FROM MENDOZA

These are made with walnut dough which, combined with the dulce de leche filling, makes an exquisite alfajor.

ALFAJORES FROM CORRIENTES

The preparation of these alfajores is based on the area’s typical ingredient: manioc. They are often filled with regional sweets.

ALFAJORES FROM TUCUMÁN

Cane honey alfajores are a specialty of Tucumán and some other provinces in the north of Argentina. Their tapas are very thin and their fillings may vary between: dulce de leche, quince and meringue.
